LANCASTER, PA (December 28, 2018) – Over the course of 2018, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers advocated for 325 children. “Thanks to the generous support of this community, we were able to light the way home for 92 of them,” states Executive Director, Jessica Laspino. Very simply, 92 children are now with their forever families because of donations to CASA of Lancaster.
CASAs are specially trained community volunteers, appointed by a judge, to represent the best interests of abused, neglected, and/or abandoned children in court. The children CASA serve have come into the child welfare system through no fault of their own, and need us and the community to ensure they will find their way into safe and permanent homes.
CASA volunteers come from all walks of life and professions and have one thing in common: they care about kids. Volunteers get to know the child they represent by talking with everyone in that child's life: parents and relatives, foster parents, teachers, medical professionals, attorneys, social workers and, most importantly, the child. They use the information they gather to inform judges and others of what the child needs, what the child wants, and, from the volunteer’s perspective, what is in the best interest of the child.
