Erin Small
Education and work history: I graduated with Bachelors degrees in education and English from Miami University in Ohio. I spent eight years teaching high school English in southwestern Ohio, then returned to school full time for a time to get a Masters in Creative Writing/Poetry. Most of my professional career has been spent teaching. For the last few years I was a substitute teacher. Over the last year, I served as a public education champion fellow for Education Voters of Pennsylvania, working at the state level to advocate for fair and adequate funding for public education. I also am involved in a wide range of volunteer work, including serving as a CASA volunteer since 2018.
What is the best part of your job? Working with our new volunteers. Their enthusiasm and curiosity are contagious.
What do you do in your spare time? I moved to Lancaster in 2017 from Cincinnati. My husband I have three teenage children. You can often find me in the stands cheering them on as they play lacrosse and baseball. A great deal of my time is spent volunteering and advocating for public education. I recently ran for school board, serve on the steering committee for Public Education Advocates of Lancaster (PEAL), Power Packs of Hempfield, and Friends of the Lancaster Public Library. If I ever have down time, you will probably see me reading: I'm currently a member of three book clubs. I also have three rescue dogs that each cause their own kind of chaos.
If you could be an Olympic athlete, in which sport would you compete? Downhill skiing maybe. Skiing was the one sport I picked up quicker than my athletic brother.
What was your favorite childhood book? A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
If you could have dinner with anyone from history, who would it be? Fred Rogers
